About the region
The Rhone Alpes region is located on the eastern border of the country, towards the south. The region is home of some of the most spectacular scenery of France from the Rhone valley in the centre, and the Alps in the west. Its capital, Lyon, is the second-largest metropolitan area in France after Paris.
Food glorious food
The city of Lyon due to historical architecture was registered as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Lyon is also referred to as a gastronomic centre of France and specialities served in its traditional bouchons (Lyonnais restaurants) include Lyon sausage, special salami (known as "rosette"), and quenelles (fish balls). The region is also recognised for the many varieties of cheese is produces including Vacherin, Tomme de Savoie and Bleu de Bresse.
World-class skiing and scenery
Anyone interested in skiing knows that the Alps has some of the best ski slopes in the world. With 15 mountain ranges there is something for everybody, from the inexperienced novice to the seasoned expert. Ski season commences in December and finishes in April, but the best snow is generally in February and March.
Getting there, and property prices
Rhône-Alpes is a major European transit hub, linking northern France, and Europe to the Mediterranean area. There are many international airports, and many other minor airports and airfields.
The region is also a transport hub for the rail-network. Currently there is a trans-national, high-speed rail-link is under construction from Lyon to Turin.
Rhône-Alpes region is very popular in France, and ranks the third most popular tourist region in France after Paris and the Côte d'Azur. Therefore, prices are above the average for France, but remain cheaper than property prices in Paris.
