About the region

Auvergne covers four departments of France: Allier, Cantal, Haute-Loire and Puy-de-Dôme. It enjoys continental weather which means cold winters but warm summers.

An ancient land of fire and water

Auvergne is famous for its lakes, many of which have public beaches, and a chain of 80 extinct volcanoes which is the most important volcanic chain in Europe. The region has many natural parks, and it is famous pure water attracts thousands of people each year in thermal spas such as Vichy. Auvergne also has a noble history due to the Bourbon family who built many castles in the north-east of the region.

Getting there

Clermont-Ferrand can be reached from Paris in about 4 hours by car (424 km) and in 3 hours by train.

About the region

The Limousin region is not densely populated, compared with England’s average of 375. It covers three departments - Corrèze, Creuse, and Haute-Vienne. Although summer temperatures can be very warm, the Limousin winters can be damp, and cold. Snow in the higher areas of the region is not uncommon.

If you like nature or romantic strolls, you will love the Limousin region with its varied landscapes of lakes, and valleys. You can also see Roman granite churches, and medieval hamlets. You can also enjoy many sports like mountain biking, canoeing, backpacking, horse riding, fishing, and golf.

Getting there

From Paris, you can reach Limoges in less than 4 hours by car (400 km) and in 3 hours by train.
