Alsace
A medieval region combining both French and German cultures

About the region
With 1.7 million inhabitants, Alsace is composed of two departments, High-Rhine in the south and the Low-Rhine in north. Alsace also enjoys a semi-continental climate which means cold winters, hot summers and long warm autumns. French is the predominant language of the region, but you can hear other dialects too.
Rich history anchored in the Middle Ages
Alsace has a very rich history. Those fascinated by the Middle Ages will enjoy the plains of Alsace which has nearly 500 medieval castles. Bordering Germany means Alsace has changed hands many times allowing traces of both cultures still to be seen in the region today.
Fine wines, premium beers and delicious food
Alsatian cuisine comes essentially from Germanic culinary traditions and is characterized by the use of pork in various specialities from “tartes flambées” (flammekueche in Germany) to the famous “choucroute”. Alsace is also known for its wine-producing region with the famous 75 mile Wine Road through typical villages. There are also, a lot of breweries in and near Strasbourg which produce world famous beers such as Kronenbourg, Heineken and Kanterbräu.
Getting there, and property prices
Located in the North-East of France, close to Switzerland and Germany, Alsace is positioned in the heart of Europe so it’s easy to get to by motorway, by plane from Basle-Mulhouse or Strasbourg airports and even by train. Currently property prices are higher than the national average.
