Alsace is composed of two departments, High-Rhine in the South and the Low-Rhine in the North. Alsace also enjoys a semi-continental climate which means cold winters, hot summers and long warm autumns. French is the predominant language of the region, but you can also hear other dialects.
Alsace has a very rich history. Those fascinated by the Middle Ages will enjoy the plains of Alsace which has nearly 500 medieval castles. Bordering Germany means Alsace has changed hands many times allowing traces of both cultures still to be seen in the region today.
Alsatian cooking comes essentially from Germanic culinary traditions and is characterized by the use of pork in various specialities from “tartes flambées” (Flammekueche in German) to the famous “choucroute”(Sauerkraut). Alsace is also known for its wine-producing region with the famous 75 mile Wine Road through typical villages. There are also a lot of breweries in and near Strasbourg which produce world famous beers such as Kronenbourg, Heineken and Kanterbräu.
Located in the North-East of France, close to Switzerland and Germany, Alsace is positioned in the heart of Europe, so that it’s easy to reach by motorway, by plane from Basle-Mulhouse or Strasbourg airports and even by train.

Located in northern France bordering Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg, Lorraine is often called the “Pays de Trois Frontières” (The Land of Three Frontiers.) The climate has cool winters and warm summers, but rarely experiences extremes of temperature. The cloudburst can be quite high, with highest fallings in May and June.
The region is packed with culture and art. “Art Nouveau” movement started in 1901 in the city of Nancy.
It is also home to the “quiche Lorraine” and many fine wines and cheeses. Lorraine also has an important military history with many museums, and monuments dedicated to the wartime history of the region.
Lorraine is also the ideal place for those with an interest in the outdoors. For winter sports the Vosges mountains are ideal for everything from skiing to ice climbing. And with a forest area covering more than 900,000 hectares, there are many more outdoor activities to enjoy.
Access to the area is easy with airports and railroads. With only 1 hour 30mins train ride to Paris, and 50mins to Strasbourg, Lorraine could be your perfect region for you.
